Stone Bridge – Temporary footbridge now open

Date Posted: 4th September 2026

Following Essex Highways previous update regarding the Stone Bridge improvement works, they are pleased to confirm that the temporary footbridge is now open to the public.

The temporary bridge provides a safe crossing point for pedestrians, removing the need to pass over Stone Bridge while the improvement works are taking place. A temporary footpath has also been installed around the rear of the site, connecting the Public Right of Way through Earls Colne Millennium Green with the Public Right of Way on the southern side of the A1124. The route is clearly signposted and available for public use.
Essex Highways are currently completing the necessary health and safety documentation ahead of the main construction period, which is due to resume on Monday 14 September. This phase of work will begin with the installation of temporary steel sheet piles.
They will continue to provide updates as the scheme progresses and will share key details of activities that may affect residents, businesses or road users.
The dedicated webpage has been updated with the latest information: Stone Bridge, A1124 Halstead Road, Earls Colne.
