Essex Highways advised that a recent inspection of Stone Bridge on the A1124 Halstead Road in Earls Colne has revealed concerns about the deterioration of the bridge beams.
As a safety measure, Essex Highways will soon implement a lane restriction on the bridge, controlled by temporary traffic lights to manage traffic flow. These lights will be installed during an overnight road closure on 8 December 2024, with local diversions and signage in place.
The bridge is in poor condition and requires replacement. It is anticipated that the replacement work will occur during the 2025/2026 financial year. Until then, the lane restriction will remain necessary.
This information has been available on the dedicated Stone Bridge webpage and further details about the replacement works will be shared in the coming months. In the meantime, Essex Highways recommend that drivers plan their journeys and allow extra travel time where possible.
