Torchlight Procession and Carol Service

“After two years of waiting the Halstead Town Council torchlight procession and carol service was once again held in the town.

It was so good to be able to stage an event which involved so many people in the town and see them enjoying some freedom after many long months of restrictions. There was an estimated 1,000 people joining the procession down the High Street and leading into the Public Gardens for the carol service.

The procession, which was led down the High Street by the Deadwood drummers, made a magnificent sight with flamed torches for adults and laser sticks for the children. I was pleased to welcome our guests Mr Simon Brice – High Sheriff of Essex, Cllr Sue Wilson – Chairman of BDC, Cllr Sue Ayres – Mayor of Sudbury who joined us for the event. The carol service was conducted by the Halstead Churches Together, supported by the Salvation Army band and Halstead Choral.

I’m so pleased and grateful for the kind donations made on the night to my Mayor’s charity which is the Halstead Day Centre. Just over £1,000 was raised which will be a welcome contribution to the Day Centre in their recovery from the financial effects from the pandemic.

The organisation and running of this event involved many volunteers and organisations on the night and in the preparation. My thanks to all of them for their commitment and contribution for a great job well done.

It was great that the Town Council were able to stage the Christmas lights switch on and torchlight celebrations this year and see so many people back enjoying the events after such a long period.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you a merry and healthy Christmas – take care and enjoy the festive celebrations.”

Mayor and Chairman of the Council
